Call it a nostalgic nod to the classic arcade game Asteroids, Atari (OTC Pink:PONGF) has teamed up with watchmaker Nubeo to release a new collection of watches that celebrate the game’s 45th anniversary.

The original Asteroids game, which debuted in 1979, rewarded players with extra points for shooting passing UFOs. In a creative twist, the new Asteroids watches feature a pair of orbiting UFOs that serve as the hour and minute hands, eliminating the need for traditional numbers.

The collection includes five distinct styles: nebula blue, plasma pumpkin, supernova red, nova nightfall, and celestial citrine. Each style boasts a differently coloured band and varying colors for the watchface elements.

Better save your quarters, the watches are available for purchase at a discounted price of US$499, although some styles have already sold out. Each style is limited to just 125 pieces.

The Asteroids watch is powered by a Japanese automatic movement that drives three spinning discs. The smallest disc features a recreation of the game’s iconic triangular spaceship, which serves as the second hand. The two larger discs, rotating at different speeds, depict asteroids drifting through space and the UFOs that function as the hour and minute hands.

All graphical elements on the watch face are printed with glow-in-the-dark  “Swiss Super-LumiNova” pigments and are protected by a durable sapphire lens and a stainless steel case. The watch is water-resistant with a 21 ATM rating and features a screw-down crown, making it suitable for recreational diving. It comes in a protective case inspired by the design of the Atari Video Computer System (VCS) that launched in 1977.

Though the watches are only available for shipping to U.S. residents, fans outside the U.S. might find solace in the possibility of someone making a smartwatch face that replicates this unique design at a much lower cost.

While Atari’s brass probably don’t want you to know that, they do want you to be aware that “RealPongCoin” or “$PONG” is a dirty knockoff. It is using Atari’s registered PONG trademark without consent or approval and the company has no affiliation with the crypto project. Their lawyers are on the case.

Atari holds a diverse portfolio of over 200 unique games and franchises, featuring iconic titles such as Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Pong, and RollerCoaster Tycoon. The Atari brand family is home to game developers like Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios, the publishing label Infogrames, and community-driven platforms such as AtariAge and MobyGames.

Atari stock (OTC Pink:PONGF) closed Wednesday 8.24 per cent higher at $0.18 and has risen 36.30 per cent since this time last year, with 60 per cent growth seen this month.
